England thrashed Croatia comprehensively in a 5-1 victory at Wembley to book their place at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

The hosts took the lead after eight minutes when Josip Šimunić hopelessly clobbered Aaron Lennon inside the area and Frank Lampard expertly despatched the spot-kick into the corner.

England continue their winning form as they warmed up for the crucial World Cup qualifier against Croatia on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over Slovenia at Wembley.

Frank Lampard's disputed first-half penalty, thanks to Wayne Rooney who tumbled too easily (Arsene Wenger will have something to say about such "dishonesty" again), put England on course for the win.

Jermain Defoe then scored the winner by adding a clinical finish to the double he scored against the Netherlands in Amsterdam last month.

However, Zlatan Ljubijankic created panic for England when he took advantage of slack marking to steal in a header after 85 minutes. Fortunately, England held on to record a victory.

Fabio Capello can be comforted by Spurs striker Jermaine Defoe's second-half display, where he maintained his scintillating Premier League and international form by scoring another goal.

Emile Heskey's bustling, unselfish style may still be Capello's preferred option, but Defoe demonstrated that he deserves to be in the starting line-up against Croatia and is currently the best partner for Wayne Rooney.

As for Robert Green, he did himself no favors as England's first-choice goalkeeper in the absence of David James.

He had an eventful start as Slovenia dominated the opening exchanges and surged forward in the dying minutes. Green will need to improve further, else England will suffer at the hands of Croatia.

Overall, Slovenia more than held their own in the early exchanges at Wembley. Fabio Capello will not be entirely satisfied by his team's showing, with too many moments of defensive carelessness.

Being careless against old nemesis Croatia, which shattered England's hopes at Euro 2008, could be disastrous. But I have faith that Capello will put the defensive problems right soon enough.

4. Make childcare arrangements if necessary, and make sure your partner won't worry about the kids. If there's one main romantic vacation spoiler, it's worrying about the kids!

5. Accommodate for checks and/or credit cards, foreign currencies if necessary, appropriate clothes, and other things you'll need on the trip.

6. Take along your "tools of the trade," or know where you can buy them. These are things like candles, lingerie, massage oil, a CD of love songs and a portable CD player, fancy clothes if you need them, etc.

It can be fun to plan a romantic vacation for your partner. And it can be even more fun to plan one together. No matter which one you choose, do have fun, and enjoy the trip!

William Gallas Stripped Of Captaincy

Arsenal vs Manchester City. This should be an easy match in normal circumstances but seeing how the Gunners capitulated against Aston Villa 0-2, I am not so sure of their chances. It was all the more disappointing after a confidence-boosting win over Manchester United and a rousing victory by the reserves in the Carling Cup.

Even Arsene Wenger, who rarely gives the other team credit, admitted that Villa deserved to win. Hopefully, Wenger can solve Arsenal’s defensive breakdowns and inability to generate consistent pressure on the opposing team.

Right now that Arsenal is in a bit of a crisis, losing four games in their first 13 matches, I am glad William Gallas has been stripped of the captaincy and he is not likely to feature against Manchester City. Well, Gallas was never a popular choice for me.

Arsenal must rebound with a victory against City, else they’ll risk falling even further off the pace. Losing Theo Walcott to a shoulder injury, and not having the suspended Cesc Fabregas will compromise their position, but Emmanuel Adebayor is back.

Manchester City would love to have Arsenal’s problems. Despite spending millions on Robinho, Vincent Kompany, Jo, and Shaun Wright Phillips, the club has been in a free-fall. City have not won since October 26, and have lost 5 out of their last 8 matches, including losses to Wigan, Bolton, and Middlesbrough, as well as blowing a late lead against Liverpool.

Mark Hughes got the vote of confidence from the board, but it doesn't mean much. Manchester City desperately need a good result here, or else they they’ll have to start worrying about relegation (they’re only 3 points clear of last place West Brom).

Aston Villa vs Manchester United Preview

Much has been said about it being too early to be out of the title race in November, mostly in relation to Arsenal. I argue that while mathematically that may be true, if you look at the recent history of points required to win the PL and points gaps that have been bridged, there are positions you can find yourself in that suggest it is very unlikely you can overcome the deficit, even if still only in November.

I suggested two weeks ago that the Man Utd game was a must win for Arsenal if they were to stay in the race and they duly delivered, only to put themselves out of contention with a loss at home to Villa last week.

The stats I used were the following (now updated for the Villa game): With 16 points dropped in their first 13 games, and assuming that you need a minimum of 86 points to win the title, Arsenal can only afford to drop 12 points in their remaining 25 games to have any realistic hope of lifting the title.

That would be 20 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats. Based on their form so far this season you would have to say that’s too big an ask. But enough about Arsenal, what of this weekend? With Chelsea at home to Newcastle and Liverpool hosting Fulham you would have to expect that the top two will record maximum points, all of which means that the Utd/Villa game is a huge fixture, particularly for Utd.

David Beckham has said he is fit and ready to play for England next week despite having no competitive action since November.

New coach Fabio Capello will name his first squad on Saturday for next Wednesday's friendly against Switzerland and Beckham hopes to have the chance to win his 100th cap.

"I'm as fit as I can be. I'm fit and sharp and I'm ready to be selected," the 32-year-old former England captain, now playing for LA Galaxy, told the BBC.

Beckham has not played for Galaxy since October and his last competitive game was when he came on as a substitute for England in their 3-2 defeat by Croatia at Wembley on November 21.

Benitez closes in on Mascherano deal

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez expects to sign Javier Mascherano on a permanent basis after selling Momo Sissoko to Juventus on Tuesday.

Benitez is keen to complete a 17 million pounds move for Mascherano, who has been on loan at Anfield since January, and fell out with the club's American owners over their failure to seal the deal late last year.

But Benitez believes Mali midfielder Sissoko's switch to Juventus has freed up the funds to keep Mascherano at Liverpool and he hinted there could be a resolution before the transfer window shuts on Thursday. "I am confident it will be tied up soon.

"Sissoko has gone and we are closer to a deal for Javier," Benitez said.

With nine of the 20 Premier League sides already eliminated after falling in the third round earlier this month, the stage is set for lower division clubs to cause some more upsets. Only three top flight clubs are guaranteed to survive as they are playing in all-Premier League ties.

Arsenal meet Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium, Wigan Athletic host FA Cup holders Chelsea while either 11-times record FA Cup winners Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur will also represent the top flight in the last 16.

Liverpool owners move to end crisis

Liverpool's American owners moved Friday to end the crisis engulfing the club by offering strong backing to manager Rafael Benitez and announcing a refinancing that will release funds for new players and a 71,000-capacity stadium.

In a strong signal of their intention to remain at the helm of the five-times European champions, George Hicks and George Gillett announced that they had appointed Dallas-based architects HKS to build the new stadium at Stanley Park, close to Anfield, the club's current home.

The 350-million-pound refinancing package will enable Hicks and Gillett to repay loans they took out to buy the club last year, as well as providing seed funding for the new stadium, which Liverpool aim to complete by August 2011 at a cost of around 300 million pounds.

The Americans will hope that the prospect of both a new stadium and a stronger squad will help draw a line under their public spat with Benitez and assuage mounting opposition to them among the club's supporters, many of whom have welcomed renewed interest from Dubai Investment Capital (DIC) in a possible takeover.

Hicks and Gillett's standing with the Liverpool supporters has deteriorated sharply following the revelation earlier this month that they had talked to Jurgen Klinsmann about possibly taking over from Benitez. The Spaniard remains hugely popular with the fans, having led Liverpool to two Champions League finals in his first three seasons in charge.

But his personal relationship with the owners has been strained since he publicly criticised their transfer policy at the end of last year. Benitez has been particularly irked by the club's failure to secure the services of on-loan midfielder Javier Mascherano on a permanent basis.

But the Spaniard sounded upbeat about the future on Friday, saying he would like to still be in charge when Liverpool move into the new stadium and voicing confidence that a deal to buy Mascherano would be done once the planned sale of Momo Sissoko to Juventus has been completed.

He said: "We are working on Sissoko's future, and we are close to a final solution. And I am confident that Mascherano will stay with us - the money from a transfer for Sissoko can certainly help. I talked with Mascherano this week and he wants to stay here. I believe he will."

Benitez added that his contacts with Gillett and Hicks this week had been positive. "We want to bring fantastic players to this club in the future, that is the aim. I have seen the new stadium plans, I hope to be here when it opens." In a statement, Hicks said that all outstanding differences with Benitez had been resolved.

"Since the meeting with Rafa on December 16, at which some widely reported communications issues were discussed, Rafa has been assured that he has continuing and enthusiastic support as the club's manager," Hicks wrote.

"Reflecting that support, Kop Holdings recently approved his transfer payment request to sign Martin Skrtel for 6.5 million pounds and is in discussions with Rafa and club management regarding additional player signings this summer. "Rafa is under contract for two more seasons following this season. I am solidly behind Rafa and am confident of the team's competitive prospects under his continuing leadership."

The construction of the new stadium, which will have an 18,500-seat single tier stand behind one of the goals in a recreation of Anfield's famous Kop end, is to be project managed by KUD International, an American group which managed construction of the Philadelphia Eagles' Lincoln Financial Field and the San Francisco Giants' AT and T Park.

The new stadium will be the second largest of any club in England, with only Manchester United's 76,000-capacity Old Trafford bigger. With Anfield, the club's home for over a century, holding only 45,400, the switch to the new stadium will significantly enhance Liverpool's match-day revenue from ticket sales and hospitality, although some sceptics have questioned whether they will be able to consistently fill such a large stadium.

England coach Capello probed for tax fraud

England football coach Fabio Capello is being investigated for tax fraud by prosecutors in the northern Italian city of Turin, a legal source said on Wednesday.

The source said the investigation had been going on for around a year and involved whether Capello should have been paying Italian taxes on money, earned from sponsors, which the coach was holding in Luxembourg.

Investigators have been looking at documents from the time Capello was coach of AS Roma between 1999 and 2004 and Juventus between 2004 and 2006.

The English FA issued a statement saying: "It is our understanding that the Italian tax authorities are currently following a procedure of looking into the finances of numerous high-profile individuals, especially in sport.

"We have spoken to Fabio and his advisors about the newspaper reports in Italy. They have explained the facts. They have also given their assurances that Fabio's tax payments are in order. The FA has no further comment to make."

ROSSI PROBED

Several top Italian sports personalities have been investigated by tax authorities including former MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi, who was probed because he was based in Britain while also spending a significant amount of time in Italy.

Capello was appointed England coach in December having won domestic titles with all four of the clubs he managed -- AC Milan, Real Madrid, AS Roma and Juventus.

The 61-year-old's last job was as boss of Real Madrid for a second time, where he was sacked last June despite helping the club to the championship.

As well as living in Spain for a time, he has a home north of Milan and also owns a house in Switzerland.

"It is a tax inspection sparked by controls on the balance sheet of Juventus, a part from some time ago and is known to everyone," Capello's son and agent Pierfilippo told Gazzetta dello Sport's Web site .

"It follows the modus operandi adopted up to now to check the earnings of famous people. One of the reasons for this method is that these people, like my father, often change residence because of work."

He also told Sky Sports News: "My father is innocent and we are really confident we will be able to demonstrate this simply and quickly."

Chelsea complete Ivanovic signing

Chelsea completed the signing of Serbia defender Branislav Ivanovic from Lokomotiv Moscow on a three-and-a-half year deal, the club said on Wednesday.

Chelsea have opened talks with Bolton over the possible transfer of Nicholas Anelka and are hopeful of concluding a deal for the French striker by the end of next week, The Times reported on Tuesday.

McLeish's decision to move, after narrowly failing to guide Scotland to the finals of Euro 2008, caused plenty of anger in his homeland.

Ferguson, who helped launch the playing career of his fellow Scot when he was manager of Aberdeen in the 1970s and 1980s, played an influential role in McLeish's decision, with the former Scotland centre-half consulting his old manager before joining Birmingham

"Alex was on the phone all the time, saying he wanted to have a go at the Premier League," said Ferguson ahead of Tuesday's match between English champions United and Birmingham here at Old Trafford.

"There had been two or three attempts to bring him down here and the euphoria and success of the Scotland team just gave him the bug to have a go. He is still a relatively young man and while I am sure he enjoyed the experience of managing Scotland, it was simply that when the chance came for full-time involvement in the daily life of a big club, he went for it. I don't blame him for that and it certainly was not a matter of running out on the Scots."

McLeish's arrival at St Andrews means four of Ferguson's old boys are currently in charge of Premiership clubs - the others are Mark Hughes (Blackburn), Roy Keane (Sunderland) and Steve Bruce (Wigan).

But while the likes of Keane have surprised Ferguson by going into management, that was not the case with McLeish.

Ferguson, who had a family link to McLeish through the Glasgow shipyards, said: "Alex was bright away from football too and in the afternoons he studied accountancy until one day he decided he would concentrate on his football and not take the exams.

"I remember his father, who worked in the shipyards with my dad, was not best pleased with the idea of his son giving up on his studies. He probably thought I was behind it and came round to my house to make his feelings known."

Ferguson also recalled how years after he'd left Aberdeen, McLeish would continue to pick his brains.

"Even in his early days as a manager with Motherwell and Hibernian, Alex used to phone me and ask why I had made certain changes and or about the training programmes we used," he said. "He is a very intelligent boy and was always a certainty to become a manager."

Ferguson, who celebrated his 66th birthday on Tuesday, said Birmingham, three points above the relegation zone, and McLeish were an ideal fit.

"Birmingham have potential crowd-wise. My father supported them and before the War they were the biggest team in Birmingham (Aston Villa are their city rivals). I realise that is a long time ago but I also feel they have one or two decent players so, without question, the foundation is there to do well."

United are second in the table, two points behind leaders Arsenal, after a surprise 2-1 defeat away to West Ham last weekend. But that setback has not persuaded Ferguson to make new signings during the January transfer window.

"We have the squad to do the job, so I will be happy to leave well alone in terms of the transfer window," he said. "In terms of buying senior players we already have all the men we need."

England's arrogant players should take the blame for their Euro 2008 elimination, according to Roy Keane.

Sunderland manager Keane believes the England squad has too players with over-inflated egos, who are more interested in their own reputations than working hard for the team. With a place at next year's European finals within reach, England blew their chance as they lost 3-2 against Croatia on Wednesday.

Steve McClaren was sacked as England head coach on Thursday following their failure to qualify for the Euro 2008 finals, the Football Association confirmed.

McClaren's short reign in charge ended after the 3-2 defeat by Croatia on Wednesday dashed England's hopes of playing at next year's European Championship." At a meeting this morning the FA board unanimously decided to terminate the contract of Steve McClaren with immediate effect," FA chairman Geoff Thompson told a news conference.

"The Board agreed to a full root and branch examination of the whole England set-up with immediate effect."Of course we have no divine right to play in major tournaments but qualification is expected."

Thompson said no time frame had been put on finding a replacement but said FA chief executive Brian Barwick had been given full authority to identify the new coach. The FA said it had also terminated the contract of assistant coach Terry Venables, the second time he has been sacked from an England post after he coached the team at Euro 1996.

Barwick, whose own role in the choice of McClaren as coach has come under scrutiny, said he wished McClaren well."He has put real hard work into this job, he has been dedicated to it, but in the end not qualifying for Euro 2008 comes up short," Barwick said.

"I spoke to him a little while ago and Steve probably accepts that qualification for Euro 2008 was a minimum requirement."

England needed a draw against Croatia to seal a place in Euro 2008 but defeat means they will be missing from a major finals for the first time since the 1994 World Cup.A 10-man FA board met from 8:30 a.m. for an emergency meeting to discuss McClaren's future.

World champions Italy eased to a 3-1 victory against minnows Faroe Islands in a Euro 2008 qualifier here on Wednesday.

In a game that had nothing resting on it following Italy's weekend win in Glasgow, which secured their passage to Austria and Switzerland next year, both players and fans seemed subdued. But Italy coach Roberto Donadoni was not worried, preferring to reflect on a successful campaign.

"The lads did a very good job and I think it's important to say that," he said. "It wasn't an easy group with France and Scotland and someone said that's it's normal for Italy to qualify for the European Championships but that wasn't true. For this reason it was a great achievement."

Germany's captain Michael Ballack said on Wednesday he is hoping to end his injury nightmare and return to action for English giants Chelsea next month.

Sven to sign Thai player Suree

Man City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is to sign the first Thai player in the Premiership. Thaksin Shinawatra is reportedly influenced the purchase of Thai international Suree Sukha (or Suri Sukha), and Eriksson will travel to Thailand to complete the transfer this week.

"Sven will be here on the 16th," Ong-Arj Kosinkar, the Thai FA general security told Reuters. "He is interested in three Thai players but he will sign Suree for sure."

If the deal goes through, the 25-year-old attacking fullback, who earns just $300 a week in the domestic league, will become the first Thai to sign for a top-flight European club.

Along with fellow Thais Kiatprawut Saiwaeo and Teerasil Dangda, Suree was invited for trials at City by ousted Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

German football hooliganism threat to Euro 2008

Former East German football clubs are becoming increasingly concerned about the rising tide of hoolinganism and violence amongst their supporters, with experts fearing it could disrupt Euro 2008.

Directors of Dynamo Dresden, whose supporters are seen as the most violent in Germany, seem almost powerless and they have taken the unprecedented step of meeting with their supporters to discuss the future of the club.

Dynamo, the leading club of the former East Germany with eight league titles recently had to forfeit from an indoor tournament for fear of a repetition of the violent incidents which occurred on November 4.

On that occasion, a division five match between a reserve Dresden team and and another leading club from the Soviet era, Lokomotiv Leipzig, erupted in violent confrontations. Police used tear gas to quell some 600 supporters who attacked each other by throwing rocks and launching smoke bombs.

The day before there had been similar violent incidents during a third division match between Dresden and FC Union Berlin.For these two matches, 1,500 police were deployed and 250 people were arrested during an operation which cost two million euros including damage caused by the hooligans. These type of incidents are causing concern but not surprise amongst German football officials."

To do more in terms of security, isn't possible. In the stadiums, everything is going fine, it's outside and after the matches that things are getting out of hand," said Klaus Reichenbach, president of the Football league of Saxony. Pilz, a sociologist specialised in football violence from the university of Hanover said that the football hooliganism is an old problem.

"The phenomenon isn't new: we can't say there has been a resurgence of hooliganism in Germany, in particular in the new regions coming from the ex-DDR (east)," Pilz said.

Dresden supporters have cultivated their nasty reputation, based on racism, anti-semitism and references to nazism, throughout the 1990's, but gained further notoriety with a number of violent incidents in 2006.

"We are witnessing, in the new states, the same thing that happnened in the 1980's and 90's in the west of the country. It's an expression of frustration with unemployment, the absence of infrastructure or a future - the football is only a pretext," said Pilz.

The sociologist points out that problems of violence, in particular in the Ruhr industrial heartland in western Germany, had been controlled by a national approach to security initiated in 1992 which "balanced repression and prevention".

The approach included stadium bans for violent supporters and putting the obligation on the cities which had first or second division clubs to take responsibility for their supporters.

Over the past three years, Dynamo Dresden has employed three social workers to try and create links with the infamous hooligan group the "Ultras", but due to a lack of financial support, one of these posts will be abolished in 2008.

"The public authorities must do more," said Pilz, who fears that Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland on June 7 to 29 will see violent confrontations between supporters, especially amongst those who don't have match tickets and converge on the city centres."

Just because the World Cup was conducted in a peaceful and festive atmosphere in Germany doesn't mean that Austria and Switzerland won't see violent incidents, especially with their easily accessible position in central Europe and their small capacity stadiums," warned Pilz.

Russian offers Croatia incentives for win

A Russian billionaire has offered incentives to Croatia for beating England in their final Euro 2008 Group E qualifier on Wednesday, a result that would give Russia a chance to reach the finals.

Spartak Moscow owner Leonid Fedun said he would donate four Mercedes cars to Croatia's best players if their team comes away with a win at Wembley. Russia had been in the driving seat following last month's shock win over England in Moscow but lost the initiative after a 2-1 defeat by Israel in Tel Aviv on Saturday.

They must now beat Andorra and hope England lose to Croatia.Not many in Russia, however, believe that already-qualified Croatia, who lost 2-0 to Macedonia in Skopje on Saturday after securing their passage to Euro finals, have the ability to beat England at Wembley.

Goal-line technology to be tested in Japan

Football governing body FIFA may introduce goal-line technology at the 2010 World Cup if it proves effective at the world club championship in Japan next month, a FIFA executive said Friday.

In the experimental system, a microchip in the ball relays an electronic signal to the referee's watch when it crosses the goal line."FIFA is very much interested in the test results," FIFA executive Viacheslav Koloskov, head of the Club World Cup organising committee, told a news conference here.

"If everything is perceived well enough, this goal-line technology will be widely used in the World Cup in 2010," he said.FIFA has decided to use the high-tech system at the 2007 Club World Cup, to be contested by continental club champions in Japan between December 7 and 16.

Italian Serie-A side AC Milan and Boca Juniors of Argentina are favourites to win it.The world body had dropped plans to use the system at the 2006 World Cup in Germany after trials proved inconclusive."

An Italian policeman who shot dead a football fan, sparking nationwide riots, now faces a charge of voluntary homicide, his lawyer said Thursday.

Police had initially said the officer was under investigation for manslaughter after the killing of Gabriele Sandri, 28, at a motorway rest area near the central city of Arezzo on Sunday.

But on Thursday, a judge in Arezzo elevated the investigation to voluntary homicide, the lawyer told reporters. According to official accounts, the policeman, who has not been named, had opened fire in a bid to intervene between rival fans who were fighting in the rest area.

Sandri had been sat in a car and the policeman fired two shots, one of which struck him in the neck.The death sparked violent clashes between football supporters and security forces in several cities.

Thousands attended Sandri's funeral this week and many demanded justice. Italian football authorities have ordered the suspension of second and third division football matches this weekend.

The Italian watchdog for public safety at sporting events on Thursday barred the supporters of six first division clubs from traveling to matches on November 24 and 25, the first weekend when the championship resumes.

Followers of Atalanta, Catania, AC Milan, AS Rome, Sampdoria and Turin were all barred from travelling, the agency said on its website. Five third division clubs are also barred.Authorities also plan new restrictions on fans with a record of violence from traveling in groups.

Sven-Goran Eriksson, who took the helm after Thaksin bought the club in July, is due to arrive in Thailand on Friday to make the signings, said Vittaya Khunpleum, chairman of Thai side Chonburi FC.

David Trezeguet is a player who has netted 10 goals from 11 matches recently. The praise from Marcello Lippi is: “He does not score goals. He is the personification of goal.” Yet, David Trezeguet does not enjoy the favour of France coach Raymond Domenech.

Riise's payslip hits Internet

Liverpool are investigating how midfielder John Arne Riise's payslip ended up on the Internet, a spokesman for the English Premier League football club said Wednesday.

The payslip has circulated on a number of fan forums and the Reds are not happy.It shows the Norway star's home address, national insurance (tax and benefits) number and other personal details.It also shows the 27-year-old's monthly gross income of 139,634 pounds (289,311 dollars, 200,213 euros).

"We are taking the matter extremely seriously and we are investigating," a Liverpool spokesman said.The payslip showed Riise was paid a basic monthly salary of 120,000 pounds, received 4,000 pounds in appearance bonuses and a 250-pound "points bonus".

He was also awarded a Champions League salary increase of 15,384.62 pounds.The left-sided player's tax payment was 55,508.28 pounds and he ended up with 82,413 pounds net after all deductions.

Sixty-five pounds was deducted for meals, 36 pounds for tickets, while there were no contributions in the student loans repayment column, the payslip showed.

Several Liverpool players' homes have been broken into during the last 18 months but Riise's house is not among them."It must have been stolen but the player simply doesn't know how it has happened," a club insider said.

"I can assure you that John Arne Riise is not in the habit of throwing payslips out." It's clearly been stolen and taken without his permission."Nobody would want their details - highly personal details - put all over the Internet."

Christmas is coming and I still have some stuff, I means lots of stuff, from last year's purchase. Thanks to my wife.

I just got to tidy up the garage a bit more. It's been weeks and the clutter is still there, no matter how I arrange the stuff, they still look messy. Most of the junk have been disposed but I need to keep the rest of the useful items.

Ronaldinho is not going anywhere. Barcelona made that clear enough. The Brazilian star is not for sale, despite new press rumours announcing his imminent departure.

Madrid sports daily AS claimed the twice world player of the year was "on the market" and could even leave during January's transfer window. As far as I am concerned, no smoke without fire, so there must be some truth in it.

Of late, Ronaldinho has come under fire following some deplorable performances on the pitch and unprofessional behaviour off it.

"Only an extraordinary transformation in his play and his public image can save him," said AS.

However, Barcelona moved quickly to dispel such rumours."Ronaldinho is not for sale, neither in December (January), nor June. It's inevitable that he has some problems with his game but we've never thought of selling him," club vice-president Ferran Sorriano told catalan newspaper La Vanguardia.

AC Milan and Chelsea are rumored to be keen on the 27-year-old. Of the two, Barcelona looks likely to sell their star to Chelsea, first for the money, and secondly, they can't threaten much under Avram Grant (unlike Mourinho).

A late goal by Paraguay striker Oscar Cardozo gave Benfica a 1-0 win over Celtic on Wednesday to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Benfica, who had lost their two previous matches on Group D, are now level with Celtic on three points each, both three points behind AC Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk whom the Italian side beat 4-1 at home.

The Portuguese team dominated throughout but Cardozo miscued a shot in the 23rd minute and hit the Celtic woodwork twice in the space of three minutes before finally finding the net.

Cardozo had his reward three minutes from time when Argentine substitute Angel Di Maria chipped the ball over the top for the Paraguayan to chest down and finish past goalkeeper Artur Boruc from close range.

Steve McClaren's position is appearing shaky once again. A 2-1 defeat by Russia has unraveled all the good work England has done in putting a string of five consecutive 3-0 wins together before this decisive group fixture.

He insisted he is not contemplating resignation and will not stay on and fight as England coach but one wonders what else is there to fight since his superstar squad is going to miss out on a trip to the Euro 2008 finals.

England looked to have the win they needed to clinch qualification in the bag when Wayne Rooney put them ahead mid-way through the first half. But two goals in the space of four second-half minutes from super-sub Roman Pavlyuchenko crashed England's hopes and left McClaren barely clinging on to his job.

England are now in a precarious position and qualification is out of their hands. Russia will qualify ahead of England if they can secure wins in Israel. Based on today's performance, that should not be a problem. McClaren has to pray that the Israelis can do England a favour by frustrating the Russians in Tel Aviv.

England will be in an even stronger position if if Macedonia beat Croatia on November 17. Then England could still overtake the current group leader by also beating them at Wembley four days later, although that would require an unlikely three-goal victory against the best side in the group.

With Israel already out of the qualifying race, the odds must be on Russia getting the two wins they need, Croatia joining them in the finals and McClaren being out of a job by the end of next month.

Hiddink rubbed salt into English wounds by suggesting McClaren's men were punished for over-confidence.The Dutchman said: "I had the feeling at half-time if we could keep the pressure on and get an equaliser it would not be easy for them. With one goal they would start worrying."

England thought at half-time that they were leading so even a draw would be a good result. But you must finish the job before you get what you want. That's what we did."I'm very proud of these guys. Is Owen A Good Partner for Rooney?

Despite Rooney breaking his three year duck with England by scoring in the 3-0 victory over Estonia, there is lingering doubt over the effectiveness of Owen playing alongside Rooney.

The England midfield pairing dilemma of Lampard-Gerrard has been solved with Gareth Barry being installed as the mainstay. He has brought a new balance to the midfield and in this match, he repaid the faith of his supporters by giving another solid performance and allowing Gerrard to roam forward.

The same cannot be said of Rooney-Owen pairing. Rooney reasserted himself in this match after a long international hiatus but Owen was barely in the action.

Both did not have much interplay and one-two passing was negligible. Against a better team which allows them less time on the ball and played a suffocating style, the lack of telepathy between the two strikers will be England's main stumbling block.

For much of the match, England played the long ball and that exposed the inadequacies of the partnership. The team sorely needs a physical presence to latch on to the high balls. Owen can be forgiven for being annoymous as he is still recovering from a surgery. It was a big relief to England that Rooney got onto the scoreboard and Estonia was not a threatening team.

England are now second in Group E behind Croatia and are almost certain to qualify. A draw against Russia in their next match would suffice. Getting a win would be the best result as they qualify with a game in hand. With the current form of the strikers, scoring in Moscow may not be so easy though.

Injuries to Terry and Ashley Cole may also hamper the team's chances and McClaren will have to struggle with fitting Lampard into the team when he recovers. Lamps was booed when he came on as a sub in the final 20 minutes.

McClaren is riding on a high now and Soccer Pundit does not think he should jeopardise England's chances by letting Lampard feature at all. As for Owen, he can still play in the first XI since there are not many good strikers around but choosing the right partner for Rooney is critical if England were to advance further.

World Champion Italy In Poor Form

Italy struggled against soccer minnow Georgia in the Euro 2008 qualifying Group B over the weekend. The result 2-0 was flattering for a lackluster performance and they need to improve a lot against a resurgent Scotland next month.

Goals from Andrea Pirlo and Fabio Grosso in each half kept Italy in second spot below Scotland but above France. They are still not in the clear yet as a defeat by the Scots and a victory for France against Lithuania would leave qualification out of the Italians' hands, even if they win their last match against Faroe Islands.

This match should have been easy especially when Georgia's most notable player, Kakha Kaladze who is playing for AC Milan, is missing through injury. However, Italy has not been the same since winning the World Cup and struggled to stamp their authority on the match.

Italian coach Roberto Donadoni will do well to reconsider the role of strikers Alessandro del Piero and Filippo Inzaghi in the team. Both are getting old, approaching 35, and are no longer as effective as in their hey days.

With the main strikers misfiring and defenders like Fabio Cannavaro, Marco Materazzi and Gianluca Zambrotta injured, no wonder Roberto commented that "the important thing was the result."

Chelsea has employed the service of ten Cate, better known as the Volcano for his ferocious temper and abrasive manner.

The coach's service at eight different clubs over the last twenty years has been marked by controversy. Vitesse Arnhem President informed the press in 1998 that "I had to sack ten Cate in 1998 because there was a bad relationship between him and my players."

Jeurgen Klinnsman is ready to replace Martin Jol as manager of Tottenham if there is assurance about the future ownership of the club.

According to the Guardian, Klinnsman is preparing for his entry into club management and believes his former club can provide it.

Kaka has nominated England as one of the two destinations which could tempt him if he ever decides to call time on his AC Milan career.

The 25-year-old Brazil midfielder is at pains, in an interview with Esquire magazine, to stress he expects to remain happy with the European champions.

But should he ever change his mind, Kaka admits clubs such as Manchester United and Arsenal would enter the equation - probably ahead of Chelsea or Liverpool. "I'm very happy at Milan - and I don't expect that situation to change," he said.

"But if you want to talk hypothetically, if I were ever to leave it would have to be for a club of equal stature - and I think I would only find that in England or Spain. 'Manchester United are a wonderful side ... I like Arsenal too."

"As for Chelsea and Liverpool, they are more tactically-oriented; they base themselves on solidity and organisation. They are maybe less creative, but they have good managers. I especially admire (Rafael) Benitez."

AC Milan will never release Kaka for any amount of money, that is unless Kaka experience a slump in form. If he comes to Manchester United, that will be a good choice as the attacking style will suit him well.

Kaka admires Benitez but I doubt he will consider Liverpool as a career move as the style of play is too stifling.

Allardyce Denies Owen Rift
