Wenger links Arsenal future to his young team's success

Arsene Wenger's future at Arsenal beyond next season depends on the success of the young side he is building. "I want to develop this team but I want to be happy with what I deliver. My continuity will largely depend on the performance of the team," the French coach told newspapers on Sunday.

"At the moment I have one year to go." It is the closest Wenger has come to saying his successful tenure at Arsenal could end with the conclusion of his contract at the end of next season.

Wenger, whose side have won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups since 1998 but will be without silverware in 2006-07 after a season of transition, said: "I believe this (young) team can achieve. "If we can get good players around them we can be efficient next year."

Wenger also said he was uncomfortable with the situation at the club since the departure this month of vice-chairman David Dein, a close friend and ally. "At the moment I cannot say I am happy with the situation.

We have to find a balance within the club without losing our stability," he said. "The only thing I can do is reassure the club and players I will respect my contract. "David and I worked together. The biggest part was 80 percent David and 20 percent me. Now it's 100 percent me...now there is a void to be filled."

'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I'm very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.'
